MAG COVERS: KERRY WASHINGTON ON THE COVER OF ESSENCE AND ELLE NOV 2010

Kerry Washington covers both Essence and Elle magazines for November 2010. It's refreshing to see her on  Essence because she is one of few fresh starlets they've featured in recent times. On the flipside, it's refreshing to see her on Elle because she is one of the few black women on the cover of fashion magazines. Although I got lucky last month with receiving someone out of the norm on the cover of Elle in the mail (ahem Gabby) this time...not so much. Anyway,  besides two covers, Kerry also has two films coming out with Tyler Perry's "For Colored Girls" and the Tanya Hamilton directed "Night Catches Us."

VIDEO: WILLOW SMITH "WHIP MY HAIR" PLUS INTERVIEW ON ACCESS HOLLYWOOD

Here is Willow Smith's much anticipated video for "Whip My Hair." I was pleasantly surprised with the artistic direction of this video: she comes into an all white room, boombox in hand and heart braids atop her head, with children eating (bland) broccoli. With a kiddie smirk on her face she opens the tape player dips her hair in blue and red paint and begins to whip her hair back and forth, thus bringing life from color into the room. Super cute!

In between filming the video, she chatted with Billy Bush of Access Hollywood where he asks 9-year-old Willow(on her first single) if she's ready to do this for a lifetime, her parents protecting her from haters, her friend's reactions to the song, her bedtime and her love for the Golden Girls (Me too!). She sounds just like my little sister.

STEEP VS. CHEAP: ACNE & SENSO

A little while ago, I first came across the Senso Neve bootie on solestruck.com and later had to do a double take at Acne's Admire. Both versions sport a leather upper but Senso's zipper is tucked inside while Acne has a cute exposed zipper. I like the look of the smooth leather on the Admire, but enjoy the Neve's price tag much more. Senso's version is on backorder and although the Acne version is much steeper, there is only one size left! Not in anytime soon will I be able to afford Acne's, but one can always dream.

RIHANNA AT MIU MIU

Rihanna looked prim and proper while getting her Dorothy on (peep the ruby red slippers and blue socks) at the Miu Miu RTW Spring 2011 show in Paris on Wednesday, October 6.

Although many have thrown shade to Rih Rih's choice of matching red hair and lips, I think the look suits her skin and eyes well. Below are some pieces from the Miu Miu show she might wear, mix-n-match, albeit at a concert or the catwalk of the streets.

Miu Miu dropped the bird print and went to the stars in the sky, I wonder if they'll have as much of a "inspired by" following as last year's print did.

HELLZ BELLZ FALL DELIVERY 2 : "BAD GIRLS NEVER DIE"

Although I was a much bigger fan of Hellz Bellz back when I was a freshman and sophomore in college, I can't deny that Lanie still gets it right with the off-the-wall artwork for the logos. Love it!! That's what kept me spending almost $40 on a t-shirt (expensive for a broke college student!) hoping I could get at least a 15% off code from Karmaloop.

In the past few collections, it's changed from having all the crazy cool logos and brash sayings to creative cuts, almost no logos/sayings and warm and cool colors. Surprisingly, my style has changed in that direction too.

See and read more of Hellz Bellz at nitrolicious.

FREE M.I.A. CONCERT AT BROOKLYN BOWL TONIGHT

M.I.A. is performing a free concert at Brooklyn Bowl tonight with doors opening at 9:30 p.m. and lines forming at 7 p.m. Wish I could go but homework and waking up early the next day always kills the fun.  I haven't ever seen M.I.A. in concert but the show should be good, she looks like she can get pretty hype.

"FOR COLORED GIRLS" TRAILER

The "For Colored Girls" trailer has finally surfaced and I love the cast: Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Anika Noni Rose, Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad, Kimberly Elise and more.  The film is an adaption of the Tony-nominated 1975 play "For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf" which is an adaption of Ntozake Shange's choreopoem by the same title.  The movie is directed by Tyler Perry and so far looks like it will capture the depth of the poems.  I hope this one is delivered well, it comes out November 5th.

DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL

The Dumbo Arts Festival kicks off this Friday, Sept. 24 and runs until Sunday, Sept. 26.  The festival is going to include an array of activities  including dance, music, performing arts, literary discussions, a digital summit, visual arts and open studios all underneath the bridge!
There is so much going on I don't know where to start.  The weather is looking good for this weekend so I'm sure it'll be a good time.

SOLANGE KNOWLES IN FASHIZBLACK MAG

Solange is gracing the cover and the inside pages of FashIzBlack magazine as their "very own muse."

I love how the message of the magazine and Solange's style correlate so well. The styling on the cover begins with a Cleopatra-esque vibe and the spread ends with a sophisticated, stylish black girl vibe.

FashIzBlack's aim is to "speak to people who accept both their African roots and their interest in the so-called westerner/occidental culture." Cool.  I'm starting to love Solange!

STREET ART: ARTIST SPECKTER'S SPOT-JOCKS

From what I understand, "spot-jocking" is when an artist comes across another artist's artwork which is faded out or destroyed and basically adds their own design to it.

This can be very controversial because it can be seen as a sign of disrespect.  Besides the feelings of disrespect, there is also the chance of someone unfamiliar with the original artist's work seeing the "makeover" and not knowing it was a makeover therefore, no longer being that original artist's work.

AN INTERVIEW WITH: Designer Tennille McMillian of Nakimuli

About a month ago, I interviewed Tennille McMillian about her uniquely stylish line, naKIMuli.  Tennille was so nice to speak with and I'm glad she took time out her busy schedule to let me interview her.
